Exterior Shutters - Which Wood is Best?

All exterior shutters designs are available in a variety of materials, responding to concerns of cost and durability, and the relevance of architecture.

PLASTIC
Walk through the aisles of the area of “big box" retailers like Home Depot and Lowes and this may be the only choice you see. Why? Vinyl shutters are light, easy to install, pre-finished, and suffer almost no ill effects from the weather. They also give housing opportunities for fine wasps, bees and spiders, because they hide large cavities behind pretty facades. If the budget and "zero maintenance" are your primary considerations, then by all means buy plastic components - and a couple of cans of wasp spray, too.

COMPOSITE or FIBERGLASS
These modern materials more accurately mimic the beauty and left traditional wooden shutters, while offering some of the advantages of plastic. Most offers to eliminate the large cavities hidden while retaining the benefits of pre-colored finish and easy maintenance. The installation is more difficult and prices are higher, however.

Wood
Would you build a piano with vinyl or fiberglass? Shutters have a long and proud history. They were by necessity made by craftsmen who used wood because it was all they had, and because it does the job perfectly. Their components had to stop invasion of arrows or storms roaring, wood was the answer. Traditionalists and the preservation of the district councils will accept nothing less. Of course wood shutters are more expensive, and require maintenance, but they imitate anything. Who cares if you do not close them to keep out marauders?

Which Wood is Best?

PINE: - Easily accessible and affordable, the pine is a fine choice budget. Stability and weather resistance than other wood, however.

WESTERN RED CEDAR: - Light, lovely, and affordable red cedar makes a fine choice when you want to blend budget, beauty and durability.

CYPRESS: - Strong, durable and more stable than the lighter woods, cypress can be harder to find. Prices reflect market conditions and vary by region. You'll only need to buy cypress shutters time and paint on occasion.

CALIFORNIA REDWOOD: - This premier wood will at the test of time and climate and look fantastic for decades. Redwood resists mildew, insects, water and wind. It is the rock and the high prices in the market, sometimes very rare.

Measuring for Exterior Shutters

One of the biggest problems people struggle with when ordering custom exterior shutters is “How to measure my window for the exterior shutters? ".

Measure is actually very easy।
First, use a good metal tape measure. Don't use your kids’ school ruler. If you don't have a good tape measure, this is your excuse for another Home Depot run.

Two things to consider are:

1 Will my shutters be decorative? Or
2 Will my window shutters be functional?

For most customers the answer is "Decorative". In that case, simply measure your window opening like in the diagram. The 'Length' is the height of the window opening. The width is the just the window opening width divided by 2.

Measuring For Functional Shutters

Well for the hard part...

Do just as above, but subs tract a 1/4" from the length and a 1/8" from your width for one shutter. This allows for expansion and contraction of the wood shutter. You can find more information about shutters at my shutter site for custom exterior shutters.

Window Boxes - Add Beauty to Your Wooden Garden Sheds

Window boxes add beauty to your wooden garden sheds and allow you can do what you do best for gardening. You can make your own wooden window boxes or there are different options available to buy prefabricated window boxes online today.

Wooden Garden Window Boxes - If you are going to build or buy a box of wooden window for your wooden garden sheds I would select either cedar or redwood for the window box. The reason for this is that the cedar and redwood both resist rot and decay. Building your own window box is very easy as a window box is nothing more than a rectangle on three sides. Use galvanized nails or screws rust-resistant for boxes.

Window Box Liners – The best thing for using a liner for wooden window box is that you will capable to eliminate the liners to work on the flowers/ plants or to work on the window box itself. This will not easy, if you direct plant into the box. Furthermore, the liner will allow the window box itself to last longer as there will not be directly moisture contact with the wood every time. If I were to make my own wooden window box, firstly I would buy the liner because I knew the dimensions I needed to use for the window box.

Constructing Wooden Window Boxes – Mostly people do not ponder for making the front edge of the window box tip out instead of being straight up on the side. This is skilled by putting a bevel cut on the bottom and sides of the window box facing the front board. Prefabricated window boxes will usually have this design feature already.

Drainage – If you want to water your flowers/plants directly into the window box, so you will need to ensure that both the liner and the window box itself drain the water out of the window box. Holes and drainage plugs do not have already in the liner then easily drill some holes in the liner. Also drill the holes in the bottom surface of the wooden window box. These holes must be to the front side of the window box so the water draining out of the window box drains out away from the siding on the wooden garden shed. If you want to allow the water to drain on the siding it will stain and decay the siding all the time. When installing the window box ensure it tips down in the front to ensure the water to the drainage holes you have provided in the front of the window box.

Vinyl Prefabricated Window Boxes – If you are not into wooden boxes there are a number of prefabricated window boxes you can buy online. Additionally, vinyl window boxes come in a different of color options. If you buy a quality vinyl window box it will last a number of years and will not decay or rot. They do have a tendency to bulge out a little if full but if they have proper brackets to support them then they will do just fine.

Different Types of Commercial Planters

In recent years, the popularity of commercial planters has increased dramatically as a fantastic way to make a welcoming entranceway and warm greetings in public locations. For concerns with al fresco areas, lovely planters overflowing with rich displays of flowers and foliage invite customers to relish and spend time. Garden planters are an impressive way to adorn the backyard, a window shelf or even the interior of your home. Planters are far less messy and further compact than conventional gardens. They can be moved around and placed in artistically pleasing displays. A good thing is that they are available in an assortment of shapes and sizes and are made from many materials. Thus, you can find one that complements your home’s motif. Below are just a few.

Fiberglass Planter

Fiberglass is a great material for garden planters for several distinct reasons Firstly, they are lightweight. Secondly, being a compliant material, they are available in all different sizes. Paired with the lightweight qua
Commercial Planterslity, that makes fiberglass garden planters an ultimate choice for larger planters, trees and bushes. Ultimately, fiberglass is a long-lasting durable material that can be molded to emulate a bouquet of colors and finishes, including glossy, metallic and matte.

Akin to fiberglass, polyethylene is lightweight, but it is quite impervious to cracking and falling apart. This material is generally used for commercial garden planters in hotels and malls. Another positive aspect about plastics is that polyethylene used is recycled to a greater
extent, so you can make a nice purchase while being environmental. Plastics are superior for indoor and outdoor use, and sustain against weather damage and temperature flux.

Wooden Planters

Wooden glass planters are generally hand-made and limited to rectangular shapes However, their sizes can be small to large. These planters can either be left finished or unfinished, and they generally come with a sort of drainage system. For the external use, teak and cedar woods work better than others.

Plastic Planters

In general, plastic planters are quite cheap and flimsy In contrast, polyethylene is a quite durable and lovely plastic polymer that works superb with exterior furniture and garden planters

Ceramic Planters

When you think of those lovely traditional and antique garden planters lavishly painted and displayed in palaces and whatnot, you're thinking about ceramic Generally hand-cast, ceramic planters are some of the rich and exotic types available With these garden planters, the colors and designs are virtually everlasting, and a good number of ceramic holders come with a high-shine finish. There are some negatives, though. Ceramic does not sustain well under prolonged exterior display. Colors will fade in the long run, plus the flimsy material is apt to crack, especially when the temperature changes fast. In addition, they're heavier than their counterparts, so moving ceramic planters can be risky. However, for interior or temporary al fresco use, ceramic is a great choice.
